nubian SQUARE POLICE STATION
Located on a prominent site in the heart of Roxbury, Massachusetts and known as the “other downtown” at the beginning of the 20th Century, Nubian Square is in the process of urban revitalization initiated by the removal of the elevated train. Natasha Espada, as Associate Principal with Leers Weinzapfel was the Project Manager and lead designer for the B2 Police Station. This new community police station with maintenance garage was designed to anchor for future development in the area and the first LEED Gold certified building built by the City of Boston. The building reflects the successful police model of a neighborhood oriented facility where the public feels welcome and participates in the security of their community.
The building responds in scale and material to the civic buildings in the neighborhood by featuring a three-story limestone-clad structure with a glass entry corner facing onto a triangular green. The entrance and siting of the building were carefully designed to provide a welcoming entrance to the community, while minimizing the impact of the level changes on the site. The program includes police offices, a community/meeting room, guard room, public lobby, gym, and locker room areas.
In addition to the many departments within the City of Boston, the project was approved by the Nubian Square Vision Task Force and Roxbury Oversight Committee.
